The aesthetic operations performed to the eyelids called blepharoplasty. The eyelids having the thinnest skin structure in the human body and moving continuously to protect the eye; can be affected from environmental factors easily. Depending on this; the signs of aging start by development of eye bags and eye wrinkles around the eyes after 30 years old. The eye skin loses its elasticity. Additionally, if there is a descent in the eyebrows, the excess skin on the eyelids becomes more noticeable.
What will be the changes after surgery?
With blepharoplasty, the excess skin in the eyelid and the excess part of the muscle layer (if present) will be removed, the muscle layer will be tightened, and the herniated parts of the fat bags will be removed or relocated. This surgery gives a better, younger and livelier appearance to the facial expression.
However, wrinkles called crow’s feet around the eyes, fine wrinkles on the eyelids, dark circles around the eyes, or droopy eyebrows will not be treated within this surgery. Additional procedures will be needed to perform to solve these problems.
Can the operation be performed under the local or general anesthesia?
The surgery which can be performed under the local anesthesia can also be performed under the general anesthesia with the co-decision of the doctor and the patient.
How long does the eyelid surgery take?
If you will be operated only from upper side for both eyes it will take 20 minutes, but if you will need both sides and eyes, the surgery can last 1 hour.
How is the healing process?
An edema (swelling) and redness may occur around your eyes after blepharoplasty surgery. 2 or 3 days after the surgery, the bruises will be significant instead of swelling and one week later the bruises are completely end when the sutures will be removed. Eye drops, antibiotics, pain relievers, edema reduction drugs will be prescribed to you by your doctor, after the surgery. You should avoid activities that can cause eye dryness such as reading a book, using a computer, watching TV, etc.. At the end of the first week you feel good enough to do your regular activities, but you should avoid hard exercises and activities for four weeks.
